AI and Education

I recently came across this report from MIT’s ad hoc committee on AI use (opens in a new tab).

AI feels like the elephant in every room now, and the report considers what it means for teaching, learning, and research. What caught my attention was the emphasis on people, community, and the residential experience. It made me think about how much an in-person event in residence can matter: a reason to leave your room, meet someone, and feel part of a life happening around you.

I think some of this reaches back to the pandemic. So much of life moved onto screens, and I’m not sure we ever fully rebuilt the habits of being together. To me, AI feels like another domino in a chain that started falling a while ago. That may be why making time for something as ordinary as an evening together feels increasingly important.
